Fernando Alonso took pole in a qualifying session that started dry but quickly became more reminiscent of Silverstone. There were several penalties handed out, either for maintenance related work or driving. They are as follows: Grosjean, Rosberg, and Webber all penalized five places for gearbox changes. Sergio Perez has been penalized five grid places as well for impeding Raikkonen and Alonso in Q2. Both drivers were able to advance despite the hold up into Q3.
